Hosted by Professor Stanton Newman, Vice-President International, the Alumni Relations Team at City, University of London is pleased to invite all alumni and external partners to a panel discussion entitled ‘Digital transformation - transition to a smarter world?’, followed by a networking reception on 27th February.

This event is an opportunity for you to find out about the latest news from around campus, engage in stimulating discussion and network with fellow alumni and University members of staff. Refreshments and nibbles will be served throughout the networking reception. You are welcome to bring a guest.

Speaker profiles

Professor Stanton Newman, Vice-President International

Professor Stanton Newman joined City, University of London from UCL in September 2010. In his role of Vice-President (International) he manages City’s Global engagement and partnerships and is also Chair of the World Cities University Network. From 2011-2017, Professor Newman was Dean of the City, University of London’s School of Health Sciences. In the role of Dean, he was responsible for the academic and business leadership of the School. He is a Professor of Health Psychology and a Chartered Clinical and Health Psychologist, specialising in the psychological and social issues of physical illness and its treatment. He has published over 420 research papers and chapters as well as 20 books. The focus of his work is around the management of chronic disease, the role of self-management, the introduction of technologies and in particular the impact of disease and treatment from the patients’ perspective.

Professor Rajkumar Roy, Dean of School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering

Professor Rajkumar Roy joined City from Cranfield University, where he was Director of Manufacturing. Professor Roy holds a PhD in Computing from the University of Plymouth (UK) and BEng and MEng degrees in Production Engineering from Jadavpur University in India.

Professor Roy has advocated creative thinking in higher education and has started several new initiatives over the last twenty years. An initiative was to set up a new Centre for Competitive Creative Design (C4D), this is around £5.5m investment from HEFCE, Cranfield University, UAL and EEDA. The Centre aims to embed design thinking across enterprises to improve their creativity and make them more competitive. This is an initiative to link design with science, technology and management.

 

Spriha Srivastava (International Journalism, 2009), Executive Editor of Business Insider

Spriha Srivastava is the Executive Editor of Business Insider, leading the London newsroom, overseeing tech, markets, finance and retail teams. Spriha has been a journalist for over a decade and has worked at CNBC, the Financial Times and Reuters. She graduated from City University's Masters in International Journalism programme in 2009 and has lived in London since then, starting from a trainee reporter to now running Business Insider's Europe team. In her free time, Spriha loves to travel around the world. She also regularly moderates and speaks at several events.

 

Dr Steven Truxal, Reader in Aviation Law and Associate Dean for The City Law School

Dr Truxal’s core research areas are Aviation Law and competition regulation, with specific focus on the legal relations and frictions between sovereign States and Non-State actors (airlines, airports, air passengers and shippers of air cargo). His particularly focused in the emerging global governance regime for international aviation, and the global economic and environmental challenges that face the sector.

With over 15 years of experience working in academia, he is regularly invited to serve as chair and panellist at major aviation and legal conferences, to deliver workshops for government officials and judges, and to provide lectures at institutions around the globe.

Formerly, Dr Truxal was Visiting Professor of English Law and Director of Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he is now Honorary Fellow. Prior to his academic career, Dr Truxal worked at Lufthansa Cargo and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

His major experience is in Retail Banking,Financial Services Industry and electronic payments. He earlier worked HDFC Bank, Tata Group, Times of India Group, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Walchand Group and several other institutions in Asia & Africa region at the leadership position.
