Building a Better Life in Law

Date: Tuesday, 28 March 2023
Time: 18:00 - 21:00
Location: TG27 foyer & TLG11 Lecture Theatre, Law School Building, City, University of London, Sebastian Street, London, EC1V 0HB
Dress code: Business / Smart casual

Hosted by Professor Richard Ashcroft, Executive Dean of The City Law School, this evening event will build on the theme of a ‘Better life in law’ championed by LawCare at their inaugural conference last September. Our expert panel of alumni, from across the profession, will share their experience of improving wellbeing in law, tips for building resilience and how to create cultures where everyone feels valued and belongs. The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A, where you are invited to pose your own questions and share your views.

This event will give participants an excellent opportunity to engage in expert talks and thought-provoking conversation with fellow alumni, students and academics from the City Law School. Beverages and snacks will be served throughout the networking reception. You are welcome to bring a guest, but please add their details at the registration.

Speakers Profile

Oscar Davies (Grad Dip Law, 2017; LLM Bar Professional Training Course, 2018) - Lamb Chambers, Barrister

Oscar is the first barrister to come out publicly as non-binary and was heralded as the media as a ‘legal first’ when they put ‘Mx’ on their chambers board to denote their gender neutral honorific (Times, Reuters, Legal Cheek). Oscar has an Instagram (@nonbinarybarrister) where they make and share free resources on trans and non-binary law. Oscar sets out recent developments in the law, parliamentary debates about reform and change, and snippets of their life as a non-binary barrister. Oscar was voted as one of 'Top 10 Outstanding Contribution to LGBT+ Life' by the British LGBT Awards 2022 for their work as an advocate and activist for non-binary rights.

Oscar is frequently asked to speak on panels regarding trans issues and/or LGBT+ issues, in particular in how employers can avoid discrimination in the workplace and how they can implement better policies for e.g. transition. Oscar undertakes a lot of pro bono work for the trans community including individual cases, and sitting on the legislative reform panel of TransActual, a trans/non-binary led organisation which lobbies for human rights changes for trans/non-binary people. The work includes lobbying the government for non-binary legal recognition.

In terms of Oscar’s own writing they have published in numerous publications, such as the New Law Journal (cover story). Oscar has just written a chapter on the European Convention Rights for the only trans law practitioner text book, A Practical Guide to Transgender Law (Nicola Newbegin and Robin Moira White).

Outside of Oscar’s trans/non-binary law focus, they have a broad civil practice at Lamb Chambers, covering employment, commercial, property and international work.
